I never really saw the point of smoothie bowls. Like, isn’t the whole point of a smoothie that you drink it on the go?

But I’ve finally discovered the secret that smoothie bowl lovers have known for years: smoothie bowls are just like smoothies, but BETTER!

Think about it: you get all that delicious healthy smoothie goodness, but with the added texture of the toppings (crunchy nuts! soft fruit! crispy granola!)

And of course, there’s the satisfaction of eating it with a spoon. It’s all in my head, I know, but I always feel like I’ve had a better breakfast when I actually EAT something, as opposed to just swigging from a cup!

How do you make a smoothie bowl?

Making your own smoothie bowls is much easier than Instagram would have you believe. All you need is a great blender, and some ingredients!

I’ve used Breville smoothie makers for years. I used to have the Blend Active Personal Blender, which was a perfect starter blender, and I loved how easy it made smoothie making.

But they recently upgraded me to a Breville Blend Active Pro Prep Blender set, and I am OBSESSED. We actually gave away all our other food processor and smoothie makers, because this little gadget has it all!

The compact size is perfect for tiny kitchens (like ours), and it has all the gadgets I need to whip up everything from fresh pesto to hummus, peanut butter, curry pastes, and (of course) smoothie bowls.

It comes with a food processing bowl, a grinding mill (for chopping nuts and other dry ingredients), and two 600ml sports bottles (so if you are going to drink your smoothie, you can just blend it straight into the bottle before you run out the door!)

I wanted to show you how you can use each part of the Blender Set, so I’ve created a super easy and delicious smoothie bowl recipe, that I really hope you’re going to enjoy.

My sweet nostalgic smoothie bowl

The weather is so miserable at the minute, that it makes me crave old comforts, so this smoothie bowl is inspired by my all-time favourite cosy foods: a peanut butter and jam sandwich with banana.

There’s something about the mix of salty peanut butter with sweet strawberry jam and creamy banana that makes me feel all snug and happy. It’s sweet, nostalgic, and just utterly yummy.

What’s in it?

I used frozen strawberries instead of fresh because we’re out of season at the moment, but they’re also a great substitute for ice cubes. This way your smoothie bowl stays cold, but has way more flavour! (You could also use raspberries or cherries instead, if you happened to have them to hand.)

The oats add extra bulk to your bowl, so it will fill you up for longer, and the peanut butter is a wonderful source of healthy fats.

I actually made this batch of peanut butter last week, using my own recipe and the Breville food processor fitting, but of course you can use shop bought if you’d prefer. (But why would you when it’s so easy to make at home?!)

For the liquid, I used vanilla-flavoured soy yoghurt to keep my smoothie bowl vegan, but you could obviously use regular dairy yoghurt. Yoghurt is thicker and creamier than milk, and (I think) it gives a much nicer consistency to the smoothie.

Usually I like to top my bowl with unsalted peanuts for crunch, but our local shop seems to have stopped stocking them. So the nuts pictured in these photos are actually hazelnuts. Almonds would also work really well!

I used the Breville grinding mill to chop them up in a matter of a seconds, and they’re the perfect finishing touch for adding a bit of crunch and texture to your creamy smoothie bowl.

This colorful smoothie bowl is creamy, sweet, and full of the comforting flavours of strawberry, banana and peanut butter.

Course: Breakfast
Servings: 1 person
Author: Katy English
  • 4 tbsp vanilla-flavoured soy yoghurt
  • 5 tbsp porridge oats
  • 1/2 banana, sliced
  • 12 frozen strawberries
  • 1 tbsp peanut butter* (see below for my recipe!)
  • 1 small handful nuts (peanuts, hazelnuts, almonds…)
  • 1/2 banana
  • 5 frozen strawberries
  • 250 gr unsalted dry roasted peanuts
  • 1 tbsp groundnut or rapeseed oil
  • 1 tsp sea salt
  1. Put all the smoothie ingredients in your blender cup. Attach the blade, and blend on high for 30 seconds at a time, until all the ingredients have been mixed in.

  2. If some of the ingredients are sticking to the sides, remove the cup from the stand, MAKE SURE THE LID IS ON, and shake vigorously to loosen the edges. Then blend again until smooth.

  1. Pop your nuts into the grind mill of your blender, and whizz for 10-15 seconds until chopped into small pieces. (Don’t go too long, or they’ll turn to dust!)

  2. Slice your remaining half of banana into disks.

  3. Arrange the ground nuts, banana slices and strawberries on your bowl, and serve immediately!

BONUS: THE PEANUT BUTTER (makes 1 big jar)
  1. Pop your food processing blade in the food processing bowl. Pour in the peanuts and oil, and blitz.

  2. The peanuts will be crushed, then they’ll clump into a paste, then emulsify into a grainy liquid. Once they hit this stage, stop the processor, add your salt, then blitz again until it becomes a smooth, thick liquid.

  3. Check the seasoning, and blitz in some more salt if you think it needs it.

  4. Sterilise a glass jar (wash it in hot soapy water, then rinse, and dry in a hot oven), then pour in the peanut butter. Keep in the fridge or the cupboard, depending how drizzly you like it!
