Prosecco and Pizzetta at Fifty9

I wonder what it is about pizza and prosecco that makes them go so well together?

Maybe it’s the alliteration.

Maybe it’s the Italian connection.

Or maybe it’s just cos they’re both so ABSOLUTELY YUM.

The one thing I do know is that a new bar and club has recently opened in Mayfair, and that they are BOSSING the pizza and prosecco trend!

Tucked away on the corner of Berkeley Square, just a hop, skip and a jump away from Green Park station and the Ritz, is Fifty9.

I sometimes walk past on my way home from work and it always looks busy and buzzing, with lots of people spilling out on to the street when it’s nice and sunny outside.

So, a couple of weeks ago, I wandered on down to meet up with a few of my fellow foodie bloggers and see what all the fuss was about…

The evening started with glasses of chilled prosecco and a massive blogger catchup.

(Fun fact about us food bloggers: you really want to make sure you get the talking out of the way early on, cos once the food comes out, there’s not a chance in hell you’re gonna hold any of our attentions for longer than it takes to chew and swallow!)

The interior of Fifty9 is very modern and trendy. The lighting is atmospheric, and gets darker as the evening goes on. The light fittings are a copper/Pinterest-obsessive’s dream. There’s plenty of seating outside, as well as several high tables and stools inside.

We clustered round a couple of these and quickly set to work on our nibbles:

Giant platters of cheeses and cured meats, served alongside grapes, olives, guindilla peppers, sundried tomatoes and slices of toasted ciabatta.

We also had a side-bowl of caesar salad for the gluten-intolerant among us.

Simple dishes, but so good when they’re done right.

And Fifty9 have nailed it!

The salad was beautifully presented and filled to bursting with chicken and fresh, crisp green leaves.

The prosciutto was wafer-thin and scattered with almonds; the cheeses a perfect mix of creamy, rich and sharp.

And all the extras on the side were a lovely added touch that you don’t really find in everyday sharing platters like this.

A big thumbs up from me!

By now, the bar had quieted down a little bit.

Apparently it’s very popular with the after-work crowd, but on our Wednesday night it definitely started to tail off around 7:30-8pm.

Fifty9 is actually a nightclub as well, which is something I’d never realised until I visited. So whilst our pizzas were being made up, we all snuck downstairs to have a little nosy.

Unfortunately my camera couldn’t deal with the low-lighting situation, but it’s really nice! Plenty of plush seating, a couple of private areas and a LOT of vodka on display.

Can’t really go wrong there can you?

Back upstairs, we all got jiggy with more prosecco, a shot of peach bellini and the much-anticipated pizzettas.

And boy were they worth the wait!

These pretty huge rectangular-shaped masterpieces are all made with hand-stretched dough. Pulled really thin and flat, they make a perfectly crispy base to the tomato sauce, melted cheese and yummy toppings.

My favourite was the chorizo with guindilla and piquillo peppers, but the roasted mushroom with caramelised onion chutney was also a good choice.

Then they had a perfectly classic margherita topped off with handfuls of fresh basil, and a prosciutto and olive one (which I avoided, because olives. ew.)

Best thing about these bad boys? Each massive pizzetta is only £5. FIVE. POUNDS.

Sure, they’re pretty thin. And if you’re a big eater you’d probably need/want two of them.

But even then, that only comes to £10.

Winner!

Overall I was very impressed with Fifty9.

If I’m being entirely honest, I wasn’t at all that sure that the food would be great. But I’ve been surprised before, and I was definitely wrong this time!

Maybe not somewhere for a quiet, leisurely dinner, but perfect for catch-up drinks and nibbles with friends or even a cheeky first date spot.

Share a bottle of prosecco and a £5 pizzetta whilst staring into each others eyes…

ROMANCE. SUCH ROMANCE.

But yeah. Just go check it out!
